Up

It’s a black and white photograph of two men reading a white map. The photograph was shot by Aubrey Powell/Hipgnosis in Iceland in 1981 and was originally presented as an idea for the Pink Floyd·‘Animals’·cover in 1977. They rejected the design for the Pig flying over Battersea Power Station. The negatives lay unused and dormant in the Hipgnosis archive until last year 2019, when it was re-presented to Pink Floyd. They liked the fact that it was originally an idea for the band and had never been used before and that when Roger Waters left the band in 1987 there were only two members left, David Gilmour and Nick Mason who were searching for a way to continue Pink Floyd. The photograph by chance captured the moment of loss and uncertainty as to the creative direction the band would take without Roger Waters.

Pink Floyd need not have worried. They went on to huge success again with Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell albums.·
